Thursday 19
Flag at half mast
The University flag will be flying at half-mast today as a mark of respect on the day of the Memorial Service for Professor Peter Townsend. Professor Townsend was one of the two founding Professors appointed to lead the new University of Essex in 1964 and was Professor of Sociology between 1963 and 1981. During this time, he chaired the Sociology department for seven years and became Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1975-8).  He became a Doctor of the University in 1993 and subsequently received at least eight similar distinctions from other universities around the world. The Memorial Service will take place at 11am at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London.

Florencia Guillen
Editions from an Encounter and Soundscape Stories 
(until Saturday 19 December)
Artist in residence Florencia Guillen has created two projects on campus connected by sound. Editions from an Encounter is an installation of printed video stills, drawings and a textual sound composition that documents an enigmatic encounter with a Mongolian nomad. Soundscape Stories is an outdoor installation with five complementary sound compositions of stories, news and other sounds captured both at the University of Essex and in Mexico between July and November 2009. BAFTA Award and Turner Prize winning artist Steve McQueen’s installation piece ‘Queen and Country’ is the artist’s solemn and objective response to the Iraq War. Made in collaboration with 155 families whose loved ones were killed in the conflict, the piece is brought to the University Gallery by the UK Art Fund. Monday-Friday 11am-5pm, Saturday 12pm- 4pm. Buddhist Chaplaincy
Mindfulness of Breathing Meditation. 12pm-1pm. Open to all. Suitable for complete beginners through to fairly experienced meditators who would like to connect with a group. We have cushions and mats for you to use as well as chairs. No charge but donations of £1 or £2 towards the costs of running the Buddhist Chaplaincy will be gratefully accepted, if offered. Monday to Friday ALL OTHER FACILITIES: 8.00am-10.00pm
Saturday and Sunday: 9.00am-8.00pm

These hours will be permanent throughout the year.
